Philanthropy, Impact & Mission-Driven Investing

Many of our clients have spent decades building successful careers, businesses, and families. As their wealth grows, so does their desire to support causes they care about.

Building and managing wealth with purpose

Wealth, values, and impact in one strategy.

At Torrey Growth & Income, we help clients integrate philanthropy, charitable giving, and investments into a comprehensive strategy. For some clients, that includes tailored investment strategies. For others, it means increasing their charitable impact through donor-advised funds, a private foundation, or thoughtful estate planning.

Strategic philanthropy

Giving well is a strategy, not a transaction.

For individuals and families considering significant charitable gifts, the decision is about more than where to give. The timing, assets, structure, and investment of charitable capital can all be part of a broader financial and philanthropic strategy.

We help clients define and implement their charitable giving

  • Donor-advised funds
  • Contributions of appreciated securities
  • Giving around liquidity events and high-income years
  • Long-term charitable strategies
  • Coordination with estate planning
  • Developing a giving strategy aligned with philanthropic priorities and timeline

Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs)

A Donor-Advised Fund is a powerful tool in the philanthropic toolkit. When you contribute cash or securities to a DAF, you can often secure a tax deduction in that year. The assets are held by a sponsoring public charity — we use Schwab's DAFgiving360 — where they can be invested for tax-free growth and you can recommend grants to eligible public charities.

We currently manage assets for several DAFs and help clients think strategically about how those assets can support their philanthropic goals.

Private Foundations

For private foundations, investment management is only one part of the job. Trustees and foundation leaders also need to manage financial operations, investment policies, distributions, tax filings, and relationships with CPAs and attorneys.

  • Developing or updating the investment policy
  • Managing foundation investment portfolios
  • Establishing accounts and payment processes
  • Managing financial operations and coordinating with CPAs and attorneys on 990-PF filings and the annual distribution requirement under IRC §4942
  • Evaluating opportunities to align foundation capital with its mission

Putting more capital to work for the mission

Some foundations are interested in putting a portion of their endowment to work more directly in support of their mission. We can help foundation leaders evaluate potential program-related investments (PRIs) and mission-related investments (MRIs) as part of the foundation's broader investment strategy.

Mission-driven investing

Aligning investment strategies with your priorities

Mission-driven investing can take many forms. Some clients prioritize environmental issues. Others focus on corporate governance, community development, or social impact. We begin by understanding your priorities and then evaluate whether investment strategies exist that can help reflect those preferences while remaining consistent with your broader financial objectives.

Our approach is personalized and can include

  • ESG screening aligned to your specific priorities: environmental impact, social responsibility, governance practices, or a combination
  • Thematic strategies in clean energy, climate solutions, water infrastructure, and other areas
  • Ongoing portfolio monitoring to seek continued alignment as companies, funds, and your own priorities evolve

We believe values and investment discipline can coexist. We can offer an overview of different approaches to find a solution that meets your needs, and we provide transparent analysis of any trade-offs on a strategy-by-strategy basis.

Our clients' impact

The work our clients fund.

Our clients have directed millions of dollars to causes that matter through donor-advised funds, a private foundation, and direct giving. Our own team is part of that tradition. George Hoover and Luwain Ng serve on the board of the Douc Langur Foundation, a conservation organization dedicated to protecting the douc langur of Southeast Asia, one of the world's most endangered primates. Zealan Hoover spent several years as a senior official at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and prior to that served on the White House team that negotiated the Paris Climate Agreement.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

ESG investing is a strategy that incorporates environmental, social, and governance factors into investment analysis and portfolio construction. Research on ESG performance is evolving; results vary meaningfully by strategy, time horizon, and methodology. Some strategies use ESG ratings as a screen to avoid companies that score poorly. Others invest proactively into companies that score well. We offer an overview of different approaches to find a solution that meets your needs, and we provide transparent analysis of any trade-offs on a strategy-by-strategy basis. Past performance of any strategy is not indicative of future results.

A donor-advised fund is a charitable giving vehicle administered by a sponsoring organization. When you contribute eligible assets, you can often claim a tax deduction and can recommend grants to qualified charities over time. DAFs are particularly valuable in high-income years or around liquidity events. Bunching several years of charitable contributions into a single year, as part of an integrated strategy, can often reduce tax liability.

Yes. We currently manage the assets for a private foundation and several donor-advised funds. We are familiar with the unique requirements of endowment management and the coordination required when working with private foundation leaders.

PRIs and MRIs can allow foundations to use portions of their capital to advance their charitable mission while pursuing different financial and impact objectives. We can help foundation leaders evaluate whether these approaches may have a role within their broader investment strategy.
